Field Guide

How a Website SEO Audit Works

A website SEO audit is a health check for your site. A tool crawls your pages the same way Google does, page by page and link by link. Crawling just means a program visits each page and reads its code. The audit then compares what it finds against a list of rules that search engines care about. Zutrix checks more than 200 of these technical factors on every scan.

Why does this matter? Because technical problems can hold back good content. You can write the best page in your field, but if Google cannot reach it, or it loads too slowly, it may never rank. An audit finds these hidden problems and puts them in one list, sorted by how much each one matters. That order is the whole value: you always know what to fix first.

What happens during a site crawl?

The crawl starts at a URL you enter. The crawler then follows every internal link it finds, like a visitor clicking through your site. On each page it records the title tag, the meta description, the images, the links, and how long the page took to load. It also checks two small but important files. The robots.txt file tells search engines which pages they may visit. The sitemap is a list of the pages you want them to index. If those files disagree, search engines get mixed signals, and the audit flags it.

You do not have to scan everything at once. With Zutrix you can audit the whole site, or pick single pages, whole sections, or URL patterns. On a large site, that keeps each scan focused on the part you are working on right now.

When the crawl ends, you get a report. Every issue in it has a severity level. Errors are problems that can stop a page from ranking at all. Warnings are smaller problems that add up over time. The report groups them, counts them, and explains each one in plain language, so you can read it without being a developer.

What are the most common problems an audit finds?

A few issues show up on almost every first scan.

Broken links point to pages that no longer exist. They waste crawl time and send visitors to dead ends.

Slow pages hurt twice: visitors leave, and Google measures speed through Core Web Vitals, its page experience scores.

Missing or duplicate meta tags are next. A meta description is the short summary under your link in search results. When it is missing, Google writes its own, and when two pages share one title, Google struggles to tell them apart.

Crawl and index problems round out the list: pages blocked by robots.txt, a broken sitemap, or images with no alt text, the short description that helps search engines understand a picture.

Duplicate content deserves its own mention. When two of your pages say almost the same thing, they compete with each other, and Google may rank neither one well. An audit spots these overlapping pages so you can merge them or point one to the other.

None of these problems are rare, and none are shameful. Even well-run sites collect them over time, the way a house collects small repairs.

Most audit tools report these same categories, but they differ a lot in crawl depth and how clear the fixes are. Our comparison of the best SEO audit tools walks through those differences one by one.

How often should you run a website SEO audit?

Run a full audit when you first take on a site. That first scan is your baseline. After that, a monthly scan works for most sites. Sites that publish often, or that ship code changes every week, should scan more often, because every change can introduce a new broken link or a slow page. Always re-scan after big events: a redesign, a move to a new domain, or a change to your URL structure.

Zutrix saves every scan, so you can compare this month to last month and prove that your fixes worked. That history is useful for more than your own peace of mind. If you report to a client or a boss, a clean before-and-after report shows the value of the work better than any explanation could, and you can share it as is. Real-time alerts fill the gap between scans by telling you the moment a new issue appears. And since the goal of all this work is better rankings, pair your audits with a rank tracker so you can watch your positions respond as the errors disappear.

What should you fix first, and what mistakes should you avoid?

Do

Start at the top of the report. Fix errors before warnings, and site-wide problems before single-page ones. A broken link in your main navigation matters more than a missing alt tag on one old blog post. Zutrix sorts the list this way for you and gives step-by-step directions for each fix, so you never have to guess.

Do

Work in small batches. Fix five or ten issues, then run the scan again to confirm they are really gone. A fresh scan is the only proof that a fix worked. It also catches anything a change broke by accident, which happens more often than most people expect.

Don't

The most common mistake is treating the audit as a one-time task. Sites change, so site health changes too.

Don't

The second mistake is chasing a perfect score. A score is a guide, not the goal; fix the issues that block crawling and slow your pages, and let the small stuff wait.

Don't

The third is forgetting content. An audit fixes how your site is built, not what your pages say. Solid keyword research tells you what to write once the technical road is clear.

Pro Tip

One last tip: pick a tool you will actually use. If your current checker only scratches the surface, this list of WooRank alternatives and similar audit tools can help you find one that crawls deeper. A simple audit you run every month beats a detailed one you run once and forget.
